semi wordless wednesday

thanks for all the nice comments regarding the race on sunday. i had an awesome time and can't wait to race again in may.

i wanted to share something i found interesting and that is ...i was NOT at all sore from doing 70.3! however, the half marathon i did in january and the one in february rendered me useless the next few days as far as being able to run and sit comfortably. i had such deep muscle soreness by the end of race day and for the next few days, that every time i sat and got back up, you would hear an "uuuggghh." it wasn't as if i ran them THAT much faster so i think it has a lot to do with the surface the race course is on. the half mary in January had 2 bridges that you had to run over twice each, and as we know the downhills are murder on the quads and then the one in february was flat as a pancake but on the most unforgiving surface known to mankind, concrete! sunday's run route was part asphalt and part hard packed shell road. i know which one i prefer.

enough words, since after all, it is semi wordless wednesday. not sure i could ever do a wordless wednesday. here is a video that the j-man took prior to the swim start on sunday. let me give you a hint, keep an eye on the right side of the video. you will see pretty big dude pulling SOME kind of flotsam out of the water. is it a baby alligator? a dead body? a metal garbage can? watch the video to find out ...
i'm finally starting to catch up on my blog reading. i hope everyone is having a great week so far. the next blog topic is going to be a doozy ...yeah, i said doozy. much love and peace out!

  1. You never know what you'll find in Florida water... I will say that every time I go to Florida, I can barely drink the H20 because it tastes so bad. Maybe that's just me though.

  2. @Matt, I'm so glad I didn't see that until later b/c I would have had that in the back of my mind the entire swim. Who knows what other flotsam there could be lurking below, right? Yuck!

  3. LOL Too funny KC! Talk about a great way to start the race haha!

As for not hurting after the 70.3. Well I did hurt LOL, we were undertrained in my book though. After Olympic distance races though... NO PAIN :) I ran a 10k TT the other day and hurt like heck, while I ran a faster 10k in a traiathlon and no pain.

I think its the different muscle groups and your body just being that prepared during the race that you can perform that well.

That is one of the MAIN reasons I like Tris. I always FEEL GOOD :)

  4. That's why it's good whn the water is murky - better not to know.

  5. I'm with Kovas. Better to not know whats out there. Anytime I swim OW and I can see the bottom, my mind goes into "What If" mode....even though I know nothing is down there to get me. Or is there.... ;)

    Glad you aren't sore! SUperwoman!

  6. Ooooh, the suspense is killing me...I can't watch videos at work.

Awesome that you aren't sore! So far, I'm pretty sore no matter what surface I've run on, but ice baths are the miracle cure. My legs felt great after Sunday's trail HM, just my slightly turned ankle giving me problems.

  7. The hurt is partly due to the surface but the intensity between a standalone half and an half iron is significant.

You may have not been much slower (having swum and ridden the bike, you just cannot push as hard) but that is the difference.
I was much more fatigued after my best marathon compared to my best ironman.

  8. I've had a similar phenomenon and I now say that I would rather do another Ironman any day over another marathon because I actually find it less painful. My theory is that it has to do with the 3 sports, crosstraining helps create a well rounded body with muscles to support your joints. Who knows!

  9. My greatest fear:0( Floating "something" in the water while I try to race in it.
    Glad THAT was harmless enough:)

  10. maybe the lack of soreness has something to do with the l-o-n-g warmup you had before running...

  11. That's totally something that would happen around here... although it would be the dead Trashcans are harmless! :)

Glad you are feeling so great!

  12. Glad to see they left the gators in the water and only removed the trash can. I'd hate for them to take away your motivation to swim faster.

You never have to worry about gators in the Midwest. Although the lake is still frozen so I guess you still win. Damn. I thought I had a good argument going there for a minute.

I agree about soreness after a HIM. I have never been sore after a HIM, but a straight up running race kills me.

  13. WTF? Was that a trash can? A barrel? That was like some 6'6" dude pulling that out too, lucky the big guy found it!

Can't wait for the doozy post!!!

  14. I wasn't sore after my 70.3 either - it is so weird how straight up running 13.2 shreds me, but the 70.3...not so much.

That is crazy about that garbage can!

  15. I'm so glad you found my blog and linked your's because I pretty much just peed my pants laughing watching the video of the garbage can come out! So funny and better than a gator! Great race! Have a great season!
