time flies when you're having fun

i can hardly believe that today is the last day of june, which also means that half the year is gone. 180 days gone in the blink of an eye almost. did that happen fast or what? i started this blog a couple of weeks prior to the beginning of the new year and still can't believe how much fun it has been. the main reason i started blogging was to hold myself accountable to the goal(s) i so badly want to achieve, especially the iron distance race. i thought that maybe a couple of my friends in real life would read it and give me hell if i didn't keep with the program. never in a million years did i think i'd have such really awesome athletes/bloggers following me. bloggers who motivate me on a daily basis with the posts on their blogs and the comments they leave on mine....thank you for keeping me motivated and accountable. i hope to meet some of you someday down the road.

i thought it would be fun to post all of my swim, bike, and run totals since january 1st up to today. so here they are:

swim - 77.62 miles or 124,917.28 meters
bike - 5208.4 miles
run - 676.11 miles

with 114 days to go before the iron distance race, i'm pleased with where i'm at training wise, up to this point. beginning in july, i plan to really focus more on riding the tri bike in the hills and doing the run immediately after, no matter how hot it is. i also plan on gradually increasing my long run. right now, my long run is 11 miles, so i'm right on track. unlike the marathon training, i don't think i'll be taking the long run over 20 miles, which is going to be strange since i'm so used to running a 24-25 mile long run a few weeks prior to a marathon. i've got a totally different mindset with the tri training even though my mind still tries to think like a marathoner.
i've found some really great articles online lately that discuss nutrition and hydration for the 140.6 and so i've come to the conclusion that this race distance is not only about being physically ready but playing it smart. in my mind, there are 5 parts to the race: the swim, bike, run, transitions, hydration/nutrition. the hydration and nutrition will be the hardest parts for me, so i'm working on that a lot now. trying to figure out how many calories i need to eat per hour, how much i need to drink per hour, how much i need to have on me, how much i need to leave behind, etc...it's daunting to say the least but i am researching, studying and testing things out like a guinea pig...a cute guinea pig!

my gosh, it's only wednesday but i'm so ready for the long holiday weekend. the plans call for lots of riding and at least one day at the beach to chill out.
what do you have planned for the weekend??

much love and peace out!

  1. my camp this weekend described an IM distance race as not being a swim, bike or run race. It is a nutrition race, if you don''t manage it you can be the best in the world at any or all 3 and you wont finish it. Good strategy to be managing that important part now to figure it out. have fun and eat lots

  2. I'm still trying to zero in on nutrition. Whatever it is, make it as simple as possible. I would put a plug in for Infinit, a one stop shop for everything, but they haven't sent me my endorsement check yet...

  3. Well, if I'm ever in Florida, I'll be sure to swing by to meet you and maybe go for a ride. I thought the same thing about starting my blog. Now I talk about my blogger buddies like I actually know them...it's neat!
Those are impressive half year numbers, keep it up, you'll be on the podium for your first iron race!

    **laughing while shaking my head**
KC thinks I can run a sub-2 half marathon, she is so funny!

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

  4. I can't believe that June is over either! Where did the time go??
I think it's awesome that you're training for an Ironman. When I did my HIM, I did tons of research, read everything I could, and just tried to absorb it all. I can only imagine what it would be like for an Ironman. Wow!

  5. Love to come to your site just to listen to your music!! The great posts make it even more enchanting!!

    Impressive mileage totals!! Wow!!

My fourth of July--I'm working with my wife in a fireworks tent for a local company. Extra summer cash but not very entertaining. Hope your holiday is better!!

  6. Great totals for the first six months of 2010! 77 miles swimming is absolutely amazing to me!! Congratulations on the awesome training and continued success toward your iron distance race!

This Saturday will be a busy day for me. 4th of July parade, niece's birthday party, and then of course fireworks that night. I also have 40-50 miles running planned, so I need to squeeze that in Friday night through Sunday.

Hope you have a great holiday weekend!!

  9. Nutrition will make or break your ironman!

    It is the fourth discipline.

  10. Nutrition and patience = success. It is great following your training and my mind boggles at how much you've done. Keep it up!

  11. Nutrition is the fourth discipline so you are smart to focus on that. Good luck on nailing it!

I am riding and then resting this long weekend. I can't wait! I hope you have a great one!

  12. I just realized that your big race and my big ride are the same weekend - cool! I'm impressed by your YTD training miles and can't wait to read your report after.

Hurricane Alex has come and gone from my area so hopefully I'll be able to get outside tomorrow. With any luck there won't be too much debris on the roads.

    Have a great weekend!

  13. I can't get over the bike and run volume you have to put up so far this year. Your base is amazing! That is really going to shine through come Ironman time!

  14. Crazy miles girl... craziness!

I hear you on the marathon mindset... Being a runner I only know running, I feel out of my realm with multisport nutrition wise. I can eat on the bike, whole foods, bars, whatever the heck I want... Last night I learned a hard lesson, I CANNOT ingest any food prior to run.

    Stay strong!

  15. Nice mileage

the forth discipline, nutrition, probably is also the hardest one to figure out. Alot of trial and mostly errors on this one. It will make or break your race.

  16. as everyone says - nutrition is key in 140.6 miles of glory.
be sure to have a plan B as well. at IMAZ I couldn't get down my food and I lost my watch so I had to quickly think of something that would work. it's a mental race. you are clerly trainign hard - look at those results so far. your body will get you through it. you got this.

  17. Like Kovas's comment. So true. and why is it that the "unknown" person's quotes are always the best ones?! Fabulous.

  18. I hope you'll share nutrition pointers!! After this weekend I am on it - eating clean from now until October 17th. I actually have more discipline for working out than I do for food/drink. I'm going to make that a priority this marathon cycle (and plan to blog about it!).

I hope you have a GREAT weekend and enjoy the beach! Thanks for all of your support!

  20. 5200 miles on the bike!!!! Holy cow!!!

    Keep on rocking it!

  21. Holy smokes. 5K on the bike already? You make me feel like a slacker.

Nutrition is tricky, but people also make it a lot more confusing than it needs to be. Take in as many calories as you can handle, especially on the bike. Also, play around with different things and don't get too hung up on the 'rules'.

If you like podcasts, check out the interview with Asker Jeukendrup on Competitor Radio. Lots of good nutrition info.

    Good luck. Keep training hard.

  22. You are a freaking volume machine!

Thanks for all of your comments and support as well. I sometimes feel like I have more in common with my blogger peeps than people I have known my whole life ---crazy huh?

Keep me updated on your nutrition. I feel like I have my HIM nutrition down but with the Full looming it is something that has been giving me a little stress. Not too sure I can just take what I did on the first 70.3 and repeat -- might have additional needs for the 2nd half!

  23. Definitely practice the nutrition. See if you can fit some solid foods in too. I can't seem to do that myself (gives me the pukies, etc), but I've heard that for those who can life is much easier. I cannot wait to read your race report in a few weeks. : )

And I appreciate all your comments and support too!

  24. Hi Kristine,
Look at your flipping total miles for the month! You are so dedicated:)

I hope that you have an awesome weekend!

  25. What an incredible half year you have had.

Lady, you keep me motivated too! And, you've got me thinking about getting back into the water again. I did a width (don't laugh too hard) today when playing with my 4 year old and thought "I could get back into this again". We'll see what the summer brings.

I'm going to pick up the book Eat to Run. I know I need to eat better - and, probably, gain a bit of weight. I'll let you know what I think.

She's super nice, she could share with you some things she learned in her first, if interested.

Your numbers look great, keep up the amazing work!! Happy 4th weekend!!
